WHY should you progress monitor in reading?
Oh the reasons!!
- So you know if your teaching/interventions are working
- So you know if you need to try something else
- So you can move on if a skill is mastered
- So you can slow down if they are struggling with a skill
- To encourage the student as they see growth
- To encourage YOU the teacher as you see your effort is making a difference
- To show and encourage parents and admin
Progress monitoring helps students learn at a more EFFICIENT pace (so they get help where they actually need it) and helps teachers make INFORMED decisions about their instruction.
WHAT should I progress monitor?
Most of the time, the 2 areas struggling readers need most help in are:
- Phonemic Awareness
- Phonics
Those two areas will make the biggest impact 90% of the time.
- For phonemic awareness, have them do the target phonemic awareness skill with 5 words.
- For phonics, just give them 5 nonsense words with the pattern you are focusing on to read.
Tracking fluency can also help you see if your interventions are carrying over to actual reading. Students love seeing their fluency graphs improve each week!
How can I make reading progress monitoring EASIER?
- Have these cards printed, cut out, and put on a binder ring for easy access
- Just choose 1 or 2 skills to focus on
- Keep a data binder with a tab for each student
- Write down their score EACH time so you can see progress
Reading progress monitoring and assessments can be as easy as 1, 2, 3…
- Grab the skill you need and flip to the next card
- Have students read the words/do the skill
- Circle any missed words on the data sheets
Simplify your data collection with these all-inclusive progress monitoring kits!
